Mia isn’t fond of her powers with electricity. She can’t control it and lives in constant fear of hurting someone. Will she ever learn to control them before something truly awful happens?
“No!” Mia cried out as her erratic powers burst from her palms. Red lightning zapped through the air and struck Nate square in the chest. He flew backwards, slamming into the wall and collapsing.
“Nate!” Energy crackled around her hands as she hurried over to him. She didn’t dare touch him in case she caused more damage. “Nate, I’m so sorry! Are you okay?”
He lifted his head and grinned at her. “Of course I’m okay, Mia. I told you, I can handle your puny lightning strikes.”
She punched him in the arm, sending a slight electric shock through his body. He only grinned at her more. “You’re such an idiot. I was worried. You know I can’t control my powers. One day, I might seriously hurt you.”
Nate pushed himself to his feet. “Nah, you’d never hurt me. I can deal with you shocking me now and then. It’s too much fun teasing you to stop just because you’re worried you’ll hurt me.”
She shook her head. “You’re impossible. And you’re an idiot.”
“You’ve already mentioned that.”
“Probably because it’s true!”
He cupped her face in his warm hand. “Mia,” he said gently. “Stop worrying. You know that my own powers will protect me from anything you can throw at me. Even if you wanted to hurt me, I doubt you could.”
She slapped his hand away. “Are you saying I’m weak?”
He chuckled. “Only to me.”
She knew that should make her annoyed, but the way he’d held her face and gazed into her eyes was playing havoc with her feelings. Yes, he was the most irritating person she knew, but he was also very hot. With his deep brown hair and crystal-green eyes, all the girls swooned over him. She still didn’t know why he chose to hang around with her. Most of the other students gave her a wide berth, due to the uncontrollable electric zaps she would give off every time somebody touched her.
Nate was the only one who didn’t seem to mind. His power somehow seemed to absorb hers and feed into his strength, making him stronger every time she zapped him. The jolt she’d just given him a few moments ago would likely have stopped a normal human’s heart. The thought made her shudder. She hated being so out of control. She hated that she couldn’t get a handle on her electricity.
“Hey, cheer up, Mia.” Nate nudged her chin with a finger. He always seemed to know what she was thinking. “You’ll get better at controlling it. Besides, you’re not the only one who can’t control their powers. Remember what Kathleen did to Priya last week? That perfect princess bounced at least three times when she came down! I swear, she’s been sitting uncomfortably in class the past few days.”
Mia couldn’t stop the small giggle that escaped. Priya was a pain in the butt and it had been satisfying to see her punished for her relentless cruel teasing. Kathleen had snapped when Priya wouldn’t shut up about how ‘lame’ telekinetic powers were. Kathleen had used those ‘lame’ powers to send Priya flying to the ceiling. She’d dangled there, screaming for at least a minute and being occasionally slammed into the ceiling a few times. The teachers had intervened fairly quickly and Kathleen was given detention, but you could tell by the satisfied smile on her face that it was totally worth it.
Nate slung an arm around her shoulders. “See? Everything will be fine.”
At that moment, loud alarms blared through the school.
Something was very wrong.
