As I write this post, I am sitting on a train from Stockholm in Sweden, to Copenhagen in Denmark. It is a five hour journey, with the stark white and black of snow covered pines and frozen lakes passing the windows. It is beautiful in a cold sort of way, and so very different to what I am used to in Australia, which makes it seem exotic. I’m loving every minute of it!
When I last wrote, I was in Norway, enjoying the Northern Lights. The past week, I’ve been in Sweden and Finland, catching up with old friends in that part of the world.
I visited the charming Skansen Village in Stockholm, which houses old buildings from the 1800’s and early 1900’s as well as a Nordic Animal park. Unfortunately, most of the animals were hiding from the chilly weather and didn’t want to be seen. 🙁
After taking the overnight ferry from Stockholm to Helsinki, I stayed at a friend’s house for a few days and explored the city with her. She took me to an island where they had brought old Finnish buildings to be preserved. We tried tempting some of the resident squirrels with nuts, but they weren’t interested…
I did manage to have a decent snow ball fight this week, though! My family and my friend all made snow balls and we pelted each other with them! I had frozen fingers and snow down the back of my neck by the end of it. Plus, they all ganged up on me to barrage me with snow!
I’m looking forward to the next week of my holiday – Copenhagen, Germany and Belgium are all on the list and I will be visiting more European friends! 🙂
